The Knight

Reflections Through My Windshield
by Dave Madill

The Knight

She walked out to her driveway on that cold December night

Stopped and wished upon a star, wishing for a Knight

A knight on a white horse to carry her away

One to keep her safe from harm forever and a day

Of course nothing happened, there was no flash of light

Slowly she climbed into her car, she had to work tonight

Just three miles down the highway, right on the edge of town

Everything was going fine until she hit the ice

She felt the car begin to slide; it turned around twice

Went backwards into the ditch and slowly came to rest

Settled down into the snow like a bird upon its nest

Then a man was by her door as she began to shake

She never saw his big truck stop or even heard him brake

Gently he helped her from the car and asked if she was all right

He asked where she was going on the cold and icy night

She told him of the diner and he offered her a ride

He helped her up into his truck and she settled down inside

He drove her to the diner and sent a tow truck for her car

As he sat and talked to her she thought about that star

Was this a Knight in Levis with a steed of chrome and steel

She thought how gentle he had been and how sure behind the wheel

That was seven years ago and he’ll be home sometime today

She has so much to tell him with their second child on the way

They still laugh about the way they met, the night she ditched her car

She sometimes has a certain smile as she gazes on a star.
